Wooden Model Kits for Adults

Wooden model kits to build yourself, away from screens: ships, cars, mechanical models and landmarks.

4,9/5 · 113 reviews

A wooden model kit is built piece by piece, by hand and away from screens: you pop out, you assemble, and an object takes shape on the table. This collection brings together all our families of wooden model kits to build yourself, from historic ships to mechanisms that move. This page helps you find the right model, depending on what draws you in and how much time you want to spend on it.

Which wooden model kit to choose? The families in the collection

Model ships

Wooden model ship kits appeal to anyone who loves curved hulls, masts and rigging. You'll find sailboats and historic ships, but also a boat with a fisherman aboard, closer to a little scene than a technical model. A wooden model ship naturally finds its place on a shelf or a desk.

Model airplanes

For model airplane kits, we're starting with the biplane, the iconic silhouette of early aviation, with its two stacked wings and its propeller. Wooden model airplanes have a special charm: they recall the first aircraft, whose structure was in fact made of wood and fabric.

Model cars

Wooden car model kits cover several styles: race car, classic car, off-roader and mechanical car, where the mechanism is as much of the appeal as the bodywork. It's a family loved by car enthusiasts looking for an object to display rather than something to play with.

Mechanical models

Mechanical model kits bring together objects that work once built: pendulum clocks, music boxes, a musical Ferris wheel, a marble run or medieval siege engines like the catapult. The gears come together before your eyes and you gradually understand how the motion is transmitted.

Would you rather have a scene to live in than a vehicle? Model kits for adults and Japanese-inspired models round out the collection, on the decor and miniature side.

How to choose the right wooden model kit

  • The subject first: you're more likely to finish a model that speaks to you. A sea lover will choose a sailboat, someone curious about mechanics a clock.
  • The type of build: a display model mostly calls for precision. A mechanical model also calls for rigor, because a misplaced gear can block the whole movement.
  • The space: think about where the model will be displayed when you buy it—bookshelf, desk or entryway console.
  • The gift: a wooden model kit makes a great gift for anyone who enjoys hands-on activities.

Which level to choose: piece count, build time and assembly

The piece count tells you how big the project is. Always read it together with the level and build time shown on the product page:

  1. under 200 pieces: a first build over one to a few evenings, like The Biplane (105 pieces) or the Eiffel Tower (152);
  2. 200 to 400 pieces: a few evenings, with more small pieces, like The Little Race Car (220), The Five-Story Pagoda (275) or The Vintage Sedan (296);
  3. over 400 pieces: a real project over several sessions, like The London Marble Run (431) or The Seahorse Three-Master (603).

For the same piece count, a mechanism to adjust makes a kit more demanding. For a first model, choose a kit rated Beginner, and move on from there.

Also check the assembly method, shown on each product page:

  • by fitting pieces together, like many mechanical models and 3D puzzles: a mistake can often be fixed by taking the pieces apart;
  • by gluing, like the miniature houses and many of the boats: regular white wood glue is all you need, and the assembly becomes permanent once dry.

To glue without smudges, our guide to glue for wooden model kits compares the types of glue.

Tips for a successful build

Set yourself up on a flat, well-lit surface, sort the sheets before you start and read each step in full before popping out a single piece. Pop the parts out gently, without forcing, to avoid chipping the edges. We offer optional precision tools (tweezers, mini hammer) for the small pieces. Once the model is built, our guide to painting a wooden model explains how to personalize it.

If a piece is missing or breaks during the build, send us a photo with your order number: we'll send you a new one.

Wooden model kit FAQ

Is a wooden model kit suitable for a beginner?

Yes, as long as you choose a subject that motivates you and take your time. Display models are a good way in. Mechanical models require more patience, because every adjustment counts for the whole thing to turn.

As for tools, our article on tools for building a model lists the three tools you need to get started.

What's the difference between a wooden model kit and a 3D puzzle?

Both are built from laser-cut sheets. "3D puzzle" usually refers to a landmark or a figure that fits together, and "model kit" to a replica of a vehicle, a ship or a mechanism.

What are the delivery times and return conditions?

Delivery takes within 5 to 15 business days, depending on your country, shipping included. You have 30 days to return an unassembled kit in its original packaging.
