A wooden model airplane kit takes you back to the early days of aviation, when aircraft were made of wood, fabric and taut wires. In this collection, we bring together kits to assemble yourself, designed for adults curious about mechanics and history. It's part of our larger wooden model kits section.
The biplane, the pioneers' airplane
The model in progress is a biplane—an airplane with two stacked wings. The two wings are connected by struts and wires, forming a kind of box that's both light and rigid. This design offered a large lifting surface without needing very thick spars, a real advantage when building with wood and stretched fabric.
The Wright brothers' Flyer, which made the first recognized powered and controlled flight in 1903, was already a biplane. During the first decades of aviation, this double-wing silhouette remained the most common, before the single wing took over with the arrival of metal structures. Building a wooden biplane means recreating, on a small scale, the craft of the very first builders.
Choosing among wooden model airplanes
Model airplanes aren't all aimed at the same people. Ask yourself a few simple questions before you choose.
- Display or handle? An airplane on a desk catches the eye with its wings and propeller. Some people prefer a model they can pick up and turn every which way.
- How much building experience? The bracing wires and small wing pieces require precision. A beginner should follow the instructions step by step, without trying to rush.
- How much space at home? An airplane's wingspan takes up width: plan for a clear shelf rather than a narrow corner.
Love gears as much as propellers? Take a look at our mechanical model kits section, where the pieces come to life.
Building a wooden model airplane without stress
Read the instructions all the way through before popping out the first piece: on an airplane, the order in which the wings are assembled matters a lot. Sort the pieces by step into small dishes, especially the struts connecting the two wings. Check each wing's alignment before moving on to the next, because a slight offset shows immediately once the aircraft is finished. If it's your first kit, our guide how to build a model covers all the basics. Precision tweezers and a mini hammer are available as options for the finest pieces.
Model airplane FAQ
Why did the first airplanes have two wings?
Two stacked wings give more surface to lift the airplane, and the struts connecting them make the whole structure rigid. It was an effective solution with the light materials of the time.
Can I return a kit if I change my mind?
Yes, within 30 days, as long as the kit isn't assembled and is still in its original packaging.
A piece broke during the build—what should I do?
Send us a photo with your order number and we'll send you a new piece. Delivery takes within 5 to 15 business days, depending on your country, shipping included.
