What do you need to make a book nook? The guide

To make a book nook, most of the supplies are already in the box: pre-cut wood, LED lighting and illustrated instructions. At Nooko, precision tweezers also come free with the kit.
So there's almost nothing left for you to get: ordinary wood glue (not included), a clear table and good lighting. Let's look at exactly what's included, what you need to add, and which optional supplies improve the final result.
What supplies do you really need to make a book nook?
A book nook doesn't call for any special tools or advanced DIY equipment: the kit already contains almost everything you need. What's included and what's left to get are covered in the rest of this guide.
The extra supplies are minimal and easy to find, with no need to invest in expensive model-making gear. If you haven't chosen your kit yet, start with the level listed on each product page. To go straight to the most guided kits, our selection of book nooks for beginners brings together scenes designed for a first build, all doable with these basic supplies.
What's already included in a book nook kit?
In every box, you'll find:
- the pre-cut wood: the plywood or MDF parts come pre-cut, with no cutting to do at all. Each piece pops out of its sheet and goes together in the order of the instructions;
- the built-in LED lighting, most often warm white, to slip into the corners of the scene. Its power source is listed on each product page;
- the illustrated instructions, which guide every step with visuals and show when to fit the lighting.
Once this first guided build is done, our guide to dioramas for beginners shows you how to go further with your own textures and lighting effects.
Which tools should you have besides the kit?
Only one of the three useful tools comes free with our book nooks: the precision tweezers. You'll need to supply the glue, and the craft knife is optional.
| Tool | Why it's useful | At Nooko |
|---|---|---|
| White glue | Joins the pieces together so they last | Not included: ordinary wood glue is all you need |
| Precision tweezers | Handle the smallest pieces, like the miniature furniture | Free with the kit |
| Small craft knife | Cleanly free a delicate piece still attached to its sheet | Optional, have one on hand if needed |
Apply the glue in small dabs: too much will overflow and mark the wood. To choose yours, our guide to glue for wooden model kits compares the types of glue and what they're used for.
Which supplies are optional but useful for a neater finish?
Beyond the bare essentials, a few extras can make the build more comfortable and improve the finish:
- Fine sandpaper, to lightly clean up a few edges if needed, although sanding stays optional on most kits.
- A fine brush, handy if you want to add a touch of paint to some parts of the scene.
- A desk lamp, aimed at your work surface, so you can handle small pieces comfortably, especially in the evening.
None of these are essential: they mainly help you go a little further once you've got the basics down, especially on our most detailed miniature houses to build, where lighting plays a central role in the final result.
Do the supplies change depending on the book nook format?
No: the basic supplies stay the same, whatever the format.
Only the build time and the piece count vary from one kit to another, from 96 pieces for Little Izakaya to 478 pieces for our largest miniature houses. Ordinary wood glue and the free tweezers are enough in every case.
