A wooden model ship kit is a whole vessel taking shape on your table, from the keel to the top of the mast. This collection brings together kits to build yourself, for adults who love the sea, sleek hulls and the pleasure of a slow build, away from screens. It's part of our wooden model kits section, where each family keeps its own character.
Sailboats, historic ships and a boat with a fisherman aboard: three ways to set sail
The models in progress cover three very different worlds. The sailboat wins you over with its clean lines: a slender hull, taut sails, rigging that gives the boat all its character once it's on a shelf. Historic ships tell another story, that of the great voyages under sail, with their tiered decks and their imposing silhouette. Finally, the boat with a fisherman aboard is admired like a little scene from everyday life: a modest boat, but full of details that invite you to take a closer look.
Wood is especially well suited to this subject. For centuries, ships were built of wood, and a wooden model ship follows the same framing logic: you assemble a structure, reinforce it, then dress it.
How to choose your model ship
Three questions are all it takes to find the right model.
- What setting? A sailboat stays light and airy, a historic ship makes its presence felt on a sideboard or a mantelpiece, and a boat with a fisherman aboard finds its place in a corner of the bookshelf.
- How patient are you? Rigging and small deck pieces call for meticulous work. If it's your first kit, start with a model with simple shapes.
- For you or as a gift? A model ship is a big hit with sailing fans, harbor dreamers and anyone who loves objects that tell the story of a journey.
If you're still torn between several families, our model airplane kits section offers another journey, this time through the air.
Tips for a successful wooden model ship
Work on a flat, well-lit surface, and keep the sheets of pieces flat until you need them. Pop each piece out gently rather than forcing it: the thin wood of the masts splits easily. Assemble the hull before anything else, because it sets the accuracy of the whole model. If your kit's instructions call for glue, choosing one suited to wood makes a big difference; our article on glue for wooden model kits helps you choose. Precision tools, such as tweezers and a mini hammer, are available as options for delicate work.
Model ship FAQ
Do you need to know how to sail to enjoy a model ship?
Not at all. The pleasure comes from the build and the finished object. Along the way, you'll pick up nautical vocabulary, from the keel to the rigging, with no prior knowledge needed.
What happens if a piece is missing or breaks?
Send us a photo of the piece with your order number: we'll send you a new one. An unassembled kit in its original packaging can also be returned within 30 days.
How long does delivery take?
Plan on delivery within 5 to 15 business days, depending on your country, shipping included. That gives you time to plan your build night or the day you'll give the kit.
