The Grand Prix Racer, on the other hand, actually drives: you wind up its spring with a key, and it then rolls forward 8 to 10 meters on a smooth floor.

All four kits are rated intermediate level and recommended for ages 14 and up. The Grand Prix Racer takes about 5 hours to build, spread over a few evenings.

Building your wooden car successfully

A car stands first and foremost on its chassis. Take the time to build it perfectly straight: if the base is crooked, the wheels won't all touch the ground. Dry-fit each piece in place before pushing it in for good, and lightly sand the edges of a piece that's too tight rather than forcing it. If your model's wheels move, check at every step that they turn freely. Precision tweezers and a mini hammer are available as options and make tight joints easier. Once it's finished, keep your car away from dust so it keeps its original look.
